The mayor of Mountark had a vampire skull on a table in his parlor. The top fangs, missing the cradle of the mandible, propped it up so that the underside could be seen in the polished surface of the wood. The delicate edges of the nose and cheekbones were chipped, and deep grooves scratched the surface at various angles.
Adullan Pickman had been unable to tear his gaze from it for more than a few moments at a time while they settled in. His large, pale brown eyes shone with boyish wonder. After the customary small talk he put his tea aside and held out his hand. “May I see it, Mr. Montgomery?”

When he died, grandma told me after I had enquired her knowledge on the subject with a pressing attitude, the entire village had been relieved of their fears. Although he had helped establish the village back in the day and had fought alongside the army to protect it from invaders, there had been strange rumors going around ever since his first wife died in childbirth.

The others were a strange bunch of creatures, even to Jadwiga, who had been sure that nothing could startle her anymore. Some were like the Teacher, shades so old that even their shining bones were beginning to fade away. They spoke in whispery voices that floated away before Jadwiga could begin to catch their words.
“I can’t understand them,” she told the Teacher as quietly as she was able, not wanting to offend the shades.
“It doesn’t matter,” he replied. “They speak because they remember speech, not because they have anything to say. Someday, they will forget speech as well.”
